The Shanghai Disneyland Park ( Chinese :上海迪士尼乐园) is a leisure and theme park in Pudong ( Shanghai ) in the People's Republic of China , which is part of the Shanghai Disney Resort is. The park is operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products and the Shanghai Shendi Group through a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and Shendi. Shendi holds 57% of the shares and Disney holds the remaining 43%. Construction began on April 8, 2011. The park opened on June 16, 2016. The park covers an area of 3.9 square kilometers and would cost tete over 5 billion US dollars . In 2018 it was visited by over 11 million people, making it one of the most visited theme parks in the world.

Following the company's promise that the Shanghai Resort would be authentically Disney and uniquely Chinese, Chinese architects, designers and research teams were hired to find ways to incorporate Chinese cultural elements. Many common Disney Park features have been redesigned or are missing from Shanghai Disneyland Park to meet the preferences of Chinese visitors.

The Walt Disney Company announced the construction of a new theme park for 2015 in Shanghai on November 5, 2009. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 7, 2011 at the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. Construction work began on April 8, 2011 and is aimed at a spring opening in 2016. In addition to the attractions and two hotels, a high-speed rail system has been built to take visitors to and from the site. On May 7, 2016, the Shanghai Disneyland Park began to partially open. The original construction costs increased due to delays from originally planned 3.6 billion US dollars to 5.5 billion.

On the night of June 15, 2016, Disney aired the opening show live on social media and on Disney TV channels. The then chairman and managing director of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger , attended the opening show along with almost 3,000 invited guests and celebrities.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic , the park was temporarily closed from January 25th. It reopened on May 11, 2020 under hygiene and safety regulations.
