Shangri-la is a small and remote valley in the Denton Hills of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is located immediately south of the Joyce Glacier and Péwé Peak and is largely occupied by Lake Buddha .
Participants in a campaign that lasted from 1960 to 1961 as part of New Zealand's Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions , the valley was reminiscent of the fictional place of longing Shangri-la from James Hilton's 1933 novel The Lost Horizon , which led to this name.
