Shark JAWS also JAWS (Shark English for shark, Jaws for jaw) is an arcade game that was published in 1975 by Atari . It is based on the movie Jaws (Jaws original title) and was the first game with animated characters.

Game description

This black and white game is very easy to use. The player controls the figure of a diver with a harpoon and has to catch a small fish that appears at a random place on the screen. He has to avoid a shark that opens and closes its mouth. For every fish caught, the player receives points, which are displayed at the top of the screen. In contrast to the animals, the diver cannot swim out at the edge of the screen. The playing time can be set by the machine operator and is 1 to 3 ½ minutes. Later games usually have a limited number of "player lives".

hardware

The hardware is based on that of the game Tank . A processor or RAM module has not yet been used. There were three ROM modules for storing the graphic data of the three characters. Three different, simple tones as well as a sonar sound as background music could be generated by ICs .

This and that

For legal reasons, regarding the film of the same name, Atari founded the subsidiary Horror Games . In addition to the large letters JAWS on the device, small Shark has been added to the left.

Since the game does not have a processor, it has not yet been emulated .

The machine can be seen in the film Piranhas (1978), produced by Roger Corman .
