The wind rifle is a device for determining the strength and direction of the wind in layers of air away from the ground. It is used in artillery to aim guns and missiles .

It essentially consists of a rifle barrel , adjusting screws and inclination indicator , with which the barrel is directed exactly vertically. The wind rifle is loaded with special probing cartridges. These consist of a cardboard tube with a propellant charge and a lead ball . Around the projectile pursue the case with the naked eye, and then be able to determine the point of impact quickly, the lead ball with a brightly colored tape or a case flare connected. After the launch, the wind speed is measured by measuring the distance between the starting point and the point of impact using a tape measureestimated at different heights. The wind direction is also determined with a degree measuring device around the gun barrel .
