The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is located in northern California and is the largest California National Forest with an area of almost 9,000 m² . Like all National Forests, it is federally owned and used extensively for forestry purposes.

The defining features of the park are Mount Shasta, 4322 m high, and the Shasta Dam reservoir . There are various leisure and recreational opportunities within the forest area. There are many hiking and camping opportunities. Snowboarding and fishing are also possible.

Flora and fauna

The landforms of the area are diverse. While there are some chaparral and savannah areas in the low-lying regions of the park, forests dominate most of the area. In the lower parts of the park, these consist mainly of pine , oak and Douglas fir . Willow and Oregon maple are also found in the canyons . As the altitude increases, the face of the landscape changes to forests of mountain hemlocks and white-stemmed pines . The highest regions of Mount Shasta are sparsely overgrown.

The park's larger mammals include black bears , elk, and bobcats . Different types of croissants are also native to the park. In total, over a hundred animal species can be observed in the protected area.

Wilderness Areas

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest includes five total reserves that are designated as Wilderness Area :

history

In 1905 the Shasta National Forest was established. Added to this was the forest area created on February 6, 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt under the name Stony Creek National Forest. In 1908 this was divided into the Trinity National Forest and the California National Forest (now Mendocino National Forest ). In 1954, the Shasta National Forest and the Trinity National Forest were combined to form the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

On August 5, 2008, a helicopter crash occurred during the Buckhorn forest fire . The crew and seven firefighters were killed. The crash is one of the worst accidents for the US fire department. A later investigation into the events reveals that the person responsible for procuring the helicopter had deliberately supplied incorrect specifications. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
