description

The Shawmut Diner was a well-preserved example of a stainless steel diner in Massachusetts at the time it was accepted into the NRHP. It was built in 1953 by Jerry O'Mahony Inc. in Elizabeth , New Jersey , and was located in a business district off Massachusetts Route 140 . It consisted of a steel frame -construction, with stainless steel ( English stainless steel was covered) and having vertical accents in black color. The kitchen was in an annex at the back.

Inside, the diner had a counter with bar stools and alcoves along the long sides. Right next to the counter there was a glass studio from which the operator of the diner broadcast a radio show every weekday.

Historical meaning

The diner shaped the cityscape of New Bedford from its installation in 1953 until it closed in 2014. Operated by Joaquim and Mary Mello from 1955 to 1971, it benefited in particular from the nearby New Bedford Regional Airport , which revived the city's economic power in the 1940s.

In 1981 Phil and Celeste Paleologos took over the diner and extensively renovated it. Phil broadcast the radio show America, Good Morning - Live from the Shawmut Diner from there until 2014 ; to date it is the only radio show in the US that was broadcast from a diner. As part of the Talk America Radio Network , it was broadcast across the United States.

The diner was closed on April 1, 2014 and transported to the Bristol County House of Corrections in nearby Dartmouth the following month . Today there is a Cumberland Farms market at this location .
