Shazam is an app for mobile devices and personal computers that became famous for its ability to recognize music playing. It is being developed by Shazam Entertainment Limited, a company belonging to Apple and headquartered in London . Shazam can analyze recorded audio sequences and, based on an acoustic fingerprint , display the title and other relevant information from Shazam's database.

Functions

In 2008 Shazam launched an app for Apple iOS . The operating systems Android , Windows Phone , Windows 8 , Windows 10 as well as Windows 10 Mobile and macOS are currently also supported. With the apps , music tracks and, in the USA, also TV programs can be recognized on the basis of audio sequences recorded with the built-in microphone of the corresponding device . Using the acoustic fingerprint of the audio sequence, hits are searched for in a central database and the result is displayed in the application. In addition to the title, this contains further information, such as the artist, lyrics , music label and a link for downloading or streaming on various services such as Spotify , Apple Music and Deezer .

The use of the apps requires a connection to the internet through which the detection is carried out. However, it is also possible to save the tone identification offline and only then query the piece of music via a WLAN connection.

history

In 2002 Shazam started its services with a method of identifying music tracks using a cell phone. The oldest service was to query a song by calling a speed dial number and was limited to the United Kingdom . The result was communicated to the user via SMS. There was a charge for calling the speed dial number and for each successful result.

In 2012, Shazam said it had 150 million users in over 150 countries worldwide. The database contained more than 10 million entries, the number of database queries was stated to be more than 4 million per day.

In 2016, Shazam said their app had been downloaded a billion times.

Shazam has been integrated into Apple's Siri since iOS 8 . The version for Microsoft Windows is no longer available since February 7, 2017 and is no longer supported.

In December 2017, there was speculation about the takeover of Shazam by Apple . On December 11th, the purchase was confirmed for $ 400 million. As a result of the takeover, Apple announced the future ad-free usage of the app.

financing

The company's previous backers include European venture capital firm DN Capital , which invested in Shazam in 2004.

By September 2012, Shazam had raised $ 32 million in funding. In July 2013, Carlos Slim invested $ 40 million in Shazam for an undisclosed share. In March 2014, Shazam confirmed another $ 20 million funding.

criticism

In February 2014, IT pros found that Shazam was sending unsolicited private data from Android devices to advertising companies.
