Sheldon Garon

Sheldon M. Garon (born December 17, 1951 ) is an American historian . He is a professor at Princeton University with a regional focus on Asia .

Garon received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Minnesota , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1973. He then continued his studies at Harvard University , where he received his Master of Arts in East Asian Studies in 1975. He received his PhD in history from Yale University in 1981 .

From 1980 to 1982, taught Garon as a research associate history at Pomona College in Claremont, CA . Until 1988 he worked as a research assistant in history and at East Asia Studies in Princeton. In 1988 Garon was appointed adjunct professor. He held this position until 1994, when he became Professor of History and East Asia Studies at Princeton University. Sheldon Garon holds the Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies. Professor of History and East Asian Studies . Between 2001 and 2003 he was chairman of a committee that dealt with regional studies at the university. As a result, the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) was created in 2003, which dovetailed international and regional studies more closely.

In his research, Garon focuses primarily on Japan, but also takes transnational and global perspectives into account. His first book traced the modern history of Japan through the history of the labor movement. In his second book he dealt with the success of the Japanese state in mobilizing its citizens. Garon opened up a new perspective on the Japanese economic miracle after the Second World War. His book on saving and spending behavior in the USA and Japan, published in 2011, was also received by the wider public. He is currently researching Home Fronts: A Transnational Study of Japan, Germany, Britain, and the United States in World War II .
