Shell Canada Limited (French: Shell Canada Limitée) is a subsidiary of the world's largest oil and natural gas company, Royal Dutch Shell . The regional headquarters are located in the Shell Center in Calgary , Alberta . Another major office is in Toronto , Ontario . Shell Canada's focus is on the development, construction and operation of new oil mining areas, as well as oil, natural gas and sulfur production. Shell Canada is also responsible for the marketing at its 1,800 gas stations in Canada. Due to a reorganization of the parent company in Europe, operations throughout North America are controlled by Shell Energy North America in Houston , Texas .

history

Royal Dutch / Shell Group founded the subsidiary in Canada in 1911 near Montreal. The company began operations with six employees and a minimum capital of $ 50,000. In 1925, the first gas station was opened in Montreal. In 1928 the company operated 19 gas stations in British Columbia. In 1931 construction began on a new refinery near Montreal. In 1962 Shell Canada bought Canadian Oil . In 1971 Shell Canada began drilling operations in the Athabasca Oils Sands . In 1977 the company moved to its new headquarters in the Shell Center in Calgary. In 1981 the company opened a research center in Calgary. In 1982, the thirty-story Sedco 709 drilling platform was moved from Halifax to Sable Island. In the same year the Sable Offshore Energy started off Nova Scotia . In 1984 the Scotford Refinery opened near Edmonton . In 1986 the Caroline natural gas field was discovered. In 1990 the Shell Environmental Fund was established. In 2004 Shell Canada invested over 400 million dollars in the development and production of the new diesel fuel with a significantly lower sulfur content. In the same year, the company discovered new oil and gas reserves in the Tay River in the Alberta Foothills . In 2005 the company increased oil production to 100,000 barrels per day from the Albian Sands . In 2006 Shell Canada acquired Blackrock Ventures. In 2010, the Jackpine Mine on the Muskeg River began mining. In 2011 Shell Canada celebrated its 100th birthday.
