Sherwood Forest Plantation , also known as John Tyler House , is an estate of historic importance on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County , Virginia .
The two and a half story main building was built in 1780. The 1190 acre property was originally called Creek Plantation. After his presidency, John Tyler lived in the house until his death in 1861. Tyler made extensive additions to Sherwood Forest Plantation that resulted in an unusually long front facade at 300 feet while the main building is no more than one room deep.
On October 15, 1966, Sherwood Forest Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places , where it is listed as the John Tyler House . Before that, it had been a National Historic Landmark since July 4, 1961 .
