Ōyama Shigeru

Shigeru Ōyama ( Japanese大 山 茂, Ōyama Shigeru ; * July 7, 1936 ; † February 15, 2016 ) was a Japanese budo expert and founder of Oyama karate (10th dan ).

Life

Shigeru Ōyama began in 1958 with karate in the style of Kyōkushin as a direct student (Uchi-deshi) of Kenji Kurosaki . In 1966 Ōyama successfully fought a "100-man fight" (Hyakunin-kumite) , became a teacher of the International Karate Organization (IKO) in the United States in 1967 and demonstrated his style there in 1981 at the invitation of the US President Ronald W. Reagan in white House . Ōyama, until 1980 the highest ranking teacher (Saikō-shihan) of the IKO, left the association in 1983 after irreconcilable differences with the Kyōkushinkai head Ōyama Masutatsu (not related) and founded the World Ōyama Karate Organization (WOKO). His students include Howard Collins , Mike Ganci , Miyûki Miura , Jōko Ninomiya and Willie Williams . Ōyama, brother of Yasuhiko Ōyama , taught in New York City .
