Shimada-shima or Shimada-jima ( Japanese 島 田島 ) is a Japanese island in the Seto Inland Sea .
geography
The 5.73 km² island is located southwest of Awaji-shima separated by the Naruto Strait and northeast of Shikoku separated by the Konaruto Strait ("small Naruto Strait"). To the east is Ōge-jima and to the south is Takashima . The body of water between the three islands is called Uchi-no-umi ( ウ チ ノ 海 , "inner sea"). Off the east coast is the island of Kagami-jima ( 鏡 島 ; 34 ° 13 ′ 30 ″ N , 134 ° 36 ′ 22 ″ E ).
The highest point of Shimada-jima with 164.5 m is located northwest of the district Musa.
The island consists of the following upper districts ( ōaza ) of the municipality of Naruto : Setochō-Ōshimada ( 瀬 戸 町 大 島 田 , "Great Shimada") in the north-west, Setochō-Muro ( 瀬 戸 町 室 ) in the north-east, Setochō-Musa ( 瀬 戸 町 撫 佐 ) in the east, Setochō-Nakashimada ( 瀬 戸 町 中 島 田 , "Middle Shimada") in the center and west, Setochō-Koshimada ( 瀬 戸 町 小島 田 , "Little Shimada") in the southwest, and the suburb ( koaza ) Awai ( 阿波 井 ) from Seto-Dōnoura ( 瀬 戸 町 堂 浦 ) in the south. In these, with the exception of Awai, 248 inhabitants (2010) lived on the island.
traffic
The panoramic road Naruto Skyline, which offers a view of Uchi-no-umi, leads mostly over the eastern ridge . This comes from Ōge-jima over the Horigoe Bridge ( 堀 越 橋 , Horigoe-bashi ) and then leads over the New Konaruto Bridge ( 小 鳴 門 新橋 , Konaruto-shinbashi ) to Shikoku.
