Shin Yong-mok (* 1974 in Kŏch'ang , Kyŏngsangnam-do ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Shin Yong-mok was born in 1974 in Kŏch'ang, South Kyŏngsang Province . He made his debut as a poet in 2000. He is still quite a young poet, with just three published collections of poetry. Like many other poets, he took part in various art groups as a high school student and has dreamed of a career as a professional writer ever since. At the time, however, Shin saw himself more as a fan of books with an interest in art workshops than a future poet. However, it is undeniable that this period had a huge impact on his future career. The activities of his working groups not only aroused his interest in literature, but also showed him the political and social role that literature plays.

Shin was influenced by older generations of activist poets, the so-called Minjung poets (민중 시인) such as B. Kim Nam-ju or Shin Kyong-nim and seriously occupied himself with the search for the path that literature must follow in society and in history. During his studies he lived a life of his own passionately and wrote poetry alongside his student activities. He was elected chairman of the student body, criticized the corruption in the foundations of the university and took part in a protest for democratization in educational institutions. He proved himself to be a man of letters who is not afraid to act politically if the situation requires it.

Yet his poetry is not caught up in an ideology or dogma, as has been the case with many before him. She conveys messages of love to society in gentle and understandable poetry and is based on his own firm belief that “coexistence with one's fellow human beings” is of greater value than “one's own happiness”. But of course his life was not completely free of conflicts, which is due to the fact that the urge for one's own success usually collides with the respect for and consideration for others and the community. Even amid the waves of neoliberalism , in which writers' competition is seen as a necessary evil, Shin attaches great importance to even the smallest bit of hope in order to uphold human dignity and freedom.
