The Shinjuku Central Park ( Japanese 新宿 中央 公園 , Shinjuku Chūō Kōen ) is a public park in the Nishi-Shinjuku district in the west of Tokyo, supported by the Shinjuku district of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo .
Overview
West of the Shinjuku train station in the then city of Yodobashi was an extensive water treatment plant ( Yodobashi jōsuijō ) with a capacity of 480,000 t of drinking water per day. It was relocated to Higashimurayama in 1965 , and a high-rise complex was built on the vacated area from the 1970s. In 1991 the prefectural administration was moved here. This is how the Shinjuku suburban center ( Shinjuku fukutoshin ) came about .
As part of this reorganization, the central park with an area of 88,065 m² was created on the western edge, partly in the area of the water treatment plant. The opening took place on April 1, 1968. As facilities there are playgrounds for children, water areas, space for different purposes, flowers of the different seasons, a biotope.
In the northwest corner of the park is the Kumano Shrine . Originally, its area was much larger, comprised canyons and waterfalls. The writer and Kyōka teacher (狂歌 師) Ōta Nampo , also called Shusanjin, met his friends there.
