Shinnosuke Ikehata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shinnosuke Ikehata ( Japanese 池 畑 慎 之 介 Ikehata Shinnosuke ; born August 8, 1952 in Osaka ), also and better known by his stage name Peter ( ピ ー タ ー Pītā ), is a Japanese actor and singer. He is one of the most famous drag queens in Japan.

Life

Peter's father was also an actor and embodied female roles in traditional dance pieces.

In his youth, Peter often danced in clubs with skin-tight shirts and trousers, which is why he was nicknamed Peter Pan ; his stage name Peter comes from this. Until 1985 he used this name exclusively for all his artistic activities. Since then, he has separated between television comedy and light entertainment, for which he continues to use the name Peter, and roles in films and his music, for which he gives his real name Shinnosuke Ikehata.

He made his debut as a film actor in 1969 with the film Stake in My Flesh , directed by Toshio Matsumoto , which stars in the Tokyo gay scene. He was cast for the film by Matsumoto at the age of 16 in a gay bar where he also worked part-time. Peter played a transvestite named Eddie in the film. The film plays with the boundaries between fiction and reality and also contains an interview with Peter as an actor, in which he is asked about the similarities between himself and his eccentric character. At the time, Peter himself was a well-known figure on the nightclub and gay scene in Tokyo.

Before the stake in my flesh , Peter wore makeup every now and then when he worked in the bar, but he didn't see himself as a drag queen. The film helped him to create a specific image around the fictional character Peter, which he continued and marketed after the film. He appears frequently as a comedian on television shows and in October 1969, after the film was released, he embarked on a singing career and released his first record.

He played the role of Kyoami in Akira Kurosawas Ran in 1985. He resorted to elements of the Japanese theater form Kyōgen .

Peter was publicly known as gay before he first publicly commented on his bisexuality in 2007 .
