Stake in my flesh ( Japanese 薔薇 の 葬 列 , Bara no Sōretsu , Eng. "Funeral procession of the roses") is a Japanese feature film by Toshio Matsumoto from 1969.
action
The film is a reinterpretation of the Oedipus legend. The transvestites Eddie and Leda vie for the favor of the nightclub owner and dealer Gonda, who ultimately chooses Eddie. Leda commits suicide. Eddie also longs for her father, who left the family early. She murders her mother and her lover, only to find out later that her lover Gonda is her father, who kills himself when he finds out. Eddie, like Oedipus, stabs his eyes out.
style
The film is shot in black and white and takes place in Tokyo's gay scene . It has no linear plot and plays with numerous alienation effects. There are flashbacks, scenes are repeated and only explain themselves later. There are various interviews with transvestites built into the film. A love scene initially shows Eddie's moaning face in a close-up and at the end shows the whole bedroom with the film crew.
reception
“A formally extremely imaginative and demanding production that does not exploit its subject, but uses a modified version of the Oedipus material in a concentrated, associative rich form to explain the behavior of the transvestites”, wrote the lexicon of the international film . The evangelical film observer comes to the following conclusion: “Japanese film that deals with the subject of homosexuality in a distanced artistic form and with documentary objectivity. The action framework of the 'parody of the Oedipus material' (son loves father) in the bloodthirsty version, however, looks more like a horror spectacle. "
Remarks
International title is after the Japanese original title Funeral Parade of Roses . Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange is heavily influenced by the film.
