life and career

Yoshio Tsuchiya was born the son of a literature professor and made his film debut in 1952 at the age of 25. Tsuchiya's second film was the classic The Seven Samurai (1954) by director Akira Kurosawa , where he lost his wife as farmer Rikichi in the flames of a house. Tsuchiya was also used in supporting roles in other Akira Kurosawa films. He also gained fame primarily from films made by the Tōhō's production studio , especially in the Kaijū films such as The Horror Sneaks Through Tokyo , Varan - The Monster from Primeval Times or Orders from the Dark . He also played supporting roles in several Godzilla films. Tsuchiya has not only appeared in many science fiction and horror films, but he also has a keen interest in similar topics and has published books on UFOs, among other things.

While Tsuchiya was a busy actor in Japanese cinema in the 1950s and 1960s, after 1970 he mainly retired to theater work. Occasionally, however, he still made films, for example in 1991 in Godzilla - Duel of the Megasaurs and most recently in 2014 in Yamauchi Keisuke: The Kayô Movie Shôwa kayô kiki ippatsu! .
