Coordinates: 10 ° 29 ′ S , 105 ° 37 ′ E The Shire of Christmas Island is a local government area (LGA) that belongs to the Australian state of Western Australia . The area is 137 km² and has about 1850 inhabitants (2016).
Christmas Island is an island in the northwest of the Australian continent about 2,600 kilometers northeast of the western Australian capital Perth and 480 kilometers south of the Indonesian capital Jakarta .

The Christmas Island Council has nine members. They are elected by all residents of the Shire. Christmas Island is not divided into districts. The chairman of the council (Shire President) is also recruited from among the councilors.
