Shoichiro Mukai

Shoichiro Mukai ( Japanese 向 翔 一郎 Mukai Shoichiro ; * February 10, 1996 ) is a Japanese judoka . He won a silver medal at the World Championships in 2019.

Athletic career

Shoichiro Mukai fights in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. In 2014 and 2015 he was Japanese U21 champions in this weight class and a member of the winning team at the U21 World Championships.

In 2017 he won the Japanese championships and was third at the Asian Championships in Hong Kong and at the Universiade in Taipei , where he won the gold medal in the team competition. At the beginning of 2018 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Paris with a final victory over the Georgian Beka Ghwiniaschwili . In the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Osaka nine months later, he defeated the Dutchman Noël van 't End . In 2019, as in 2017, he won the Japanese championships. At the World Championships in Tokyo , he defeated the Cuban Iván Felipe Silva in the quarter-finals and the Swede Marcus Nyman in the semi- finals, and lost the final to Noël van 't End.
