Tilhar is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
The city is part of the Shahjahanpur district . Tilhar has the status of a Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 25 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 61,444 inhabitants, of which 31,908 were men and 29,536 women. Muslims make up the majority of the city's population. The literacy rate in 2011 was 50.77%.
Tilhar is the oldest city in what is now Shahjahanpur District. During the Mughal period , the city supplied the Mughal Army with bows that were made here. At that time the city was known as Kamaan Nagar.
