The shortridge langur ( Trachypithecus shortridgei ) is a little-known primate species from the group of slender monkeys (Presbytini). It used to be considered a subspecies of the cap langur ( T. pileatus ), from which it differs mainly in the color of its fur. They live in northern Myanmar east of the Chindwin River in the Kachin State north of Myitkyina , as well as in the Dulong Valley in Gongshan County in southwest China ( Yunnan ). The distribution area thus adjoins that of the cap langur, which occurs west of the Chindwin.

features

Shortridge langurs, like all crested langurs, are slender primates with a tail that is longer than the body. The animals reach a head-trunk length of 67 to 72 cm and have a 95 to 104 cm long tail. In contrast to most other langurs, the Shortridge langur is almost monochrome. The fur is silver-gray, the arms and legs are a little lighter and the tail becomes increasingly darker towards the tip. Hands and feet are blackish. The hair of the whiskers is shorter than that of the golden langur ( T. geei ) and the cap langur , the other two species of the pileatus species group within the genus of the crested langur.

Habitat and way of life

Habitat of this species are hilly, evergreen forests at heights of 200 to 2500 meters above sea level. There he lives sympathetically with the Burmese snub-nosed monkey ( Rhinopithecus strykeri ) , which was discovered only a few years ago . Nothing is known about the way of life, it probably corresponds to that of the other crested langurs. As a result, these animals are diurnal tree dwellers, they live in groups and feed on leaves and other plant material.

The IUCN lists the Shortridge langur as endangered . The reasons for this lie in hunting and the destruction of their habitat.
