Should Wives Work? is an American short film directed by Leslie Goodwins with Leon Errol in the lead role. The slapstick comedy from 1937 was nominated for an Oscar in 1938 for “Best Short Film with Two Film Roles” .
action
Leon's wife needs more money to be able to afford more expensive things. Because of this, she takes a job at Leon's company. Since her employer does not employ married women, she takes the job under her maiden name. When Leon and his wife are invited by their boss to dinner followed by an overnight stay, they have to pretend they are unmarried.
background
Vivien Oakland also played Leon Errol's wife in Wrong Romance (1937), His Pest Friend (1938) and Berth Quakes (1938).
Should Wives Work? is a typical Leon Errol film of its time. The short films were mostly about married men in the midlife crisis who are trying to win back their youth or, as in this example, are overwhelmed by the innovations in the world.
