Shun Medoruma

Shun Medoruma ( Japanese 目 取 真 俊 , Medoruma Shun ; born October 6, 1960 , in Nakijin , Okinawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese writer.

Life

Medoruma attended the prefectural Kitayama High School in Nakijin and graduated from the Law Faculty of Ryūkyū University . He initially worked as a factory worker, guard and tutor and then took a job as a Japanese teacher at a prefectural high school, which he kept until 2003.

In 1997 he received both the "Literature Prize of the Kyūshū Art Festival" and the coveted Akutagawa Prize for Suiteki ( 水滴 , dt. Water drops ) . Three years later he won two awards with Mabuigumi ( 魂 込 め ) again: the Kiyama Shōhei Literature Prize and the Kawabata Yasunari Literature Prize . In 2004 the novel Fūon ( 風 音 ) was filmed by Yōichi Higashi based on a script he had written himself and was awarded the Innovation Prize at the World Film Festival in Montréal .

In addition to his narrative work, Medoruma also publishes essays and reviews in the Okinawa Times and the Ryūkyū Shimpō. Thematically, Medoruma deals again and again with the Battle of Okinawa , the stationing of American armed forces, which continues to this day, and the problems resulting from it. More recently, Medoruma also wrote about the lawsuit against Kenzaburō Ōe and the Iwanami Shoten publishing house, as well as the approval process for Japanese school books .
