Shure SM57

The Shure SM57 is a dynamic microphone that is mainly used to pick up instruments. In addition to the SM58 vocal microphone , it is the most popular microphone from the US manufacturer .

The abbreviation in the name stands for " S tudio M icrophone" with its consecutive number.

The SM57 is a moving coil microphone with cardioid characteristics . The SM57 is the preferred choice for picking up percussion instruments such as snares , tom toms and percussion instruments. However, it is also suitable for the acceptance of guitar amps and woodwind instruments. It is also occasionally used for vocal recordings if the sound color of the microphone and its insensitivity is appropriate for the application. The cardioid characteristic reduces the pick-up of background noise. The microphone's exceptional robustness is often emphasized, which makes it attractive for stage use.

Due to its relatively low sensitivity , the microphone is primarily suitable for loud and overly loud sound sources .

The Recording Hacks page calls it "probably the most popular microphone in history".

history

The SM57 has been manufactured slightly modified since 1965. Since its inception, it has been used as a desk microphone by every US president. The later introduced SM58 uses the same capsule ( vibrating membrane ), but has a more robust design and can therefore also be used as a close-up microphone and placed closer to the sound source in order to take advantage of the close-up effect, which reduces acoustic feedback .

Technical specifications

The frequency response of the microphone is specified by the manufacturer from 40 to 15,000 Hertz . In the range from around 150 to 3000 Hertz, this is fairly linear, with a deviation of less than 3 decimal points . In the bass range it drops significantly; In the high range, there is a marked increase in the reproduction at around 6.5 kHz and drops to different degrees depending on the manufacturing variance and maintenance status.

A built-in mini- transformer galvanically separates the capsule from the connection line and prevents damage from being accidentally connected to the phantom or tone wire supply . The connection impedance is about 310 ohms .

The sensitivity (Sensitivity) is at 1 kHz at −56.0  dBV / Pa (1.60 mV / Pa); the maximum permissible sound pressure level is 156 dB SPL .

The weight of the microphone is 285 g.
