Shuttle dial
As Shuttle Dial (of English. To shuttle = commute ) is referred to a particular control on electronic devices. Like a jog dial , it is a wheel or a rotary knob, in contrast to this, however, it cannot be turned arbitrarily, but only in a certain range and springs back into its starting position when released.
Shuttle dials are used for ergonomic adjustment of a value: Depending on the direction and how much the user deflects the wheel, the value is increased or decreased at different speeds; this enables coarse and fine adjustment with a single control element.
Examples of usage:
- The frequency setting of some radios with a digital tuner
- As part of a jog / shuttle on video recorders and similar devices; This allows the tape position to be changed in the still image mode, i.e. it can be rewound and forwarded at different speeds.
- As a zoom rocker for some cameras, which allows zooming at different speeds .
- Pitch benders on keyboard instruments are used to modulate the pitch .
