Shuttleworth Hall is a mansion in the parish of Hapton in the English county of Lancashire . The 17th century building was later used as a farmhouse and is now listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

The oldest part of the house dates from the middle of the 17th century. An inscription above the outer entrance indicates that it was built in 1639. While historians believe the house was the seat of the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall , Padiham , the connection of this branch of the family to Shuttleworth Hall is not clear. In 1856 the building was described as a farm and had two separate apartments. In April 1953 Shuttleworth Hall was designated a Grade I Historic Structure. This is granted to buildings that are “of exceptional interest, sometimes also of international importance.” The garden wall and the entrance arch are also classified as historical buildings II *. Grade listed.

architecture

The house was made of sandstone - dry stone built in layers; the roof is covered with stone slabs. It has an H-shaped floor plan and two stories. Most of the windows are studded and have casement windows ; the windows of the hall are not coupled. A garden on the south front of the house is enclosed by a wall, the passage of which has a segmental arch.
