SiRF II chip

SiRF Technology was a manufacturer of chipsets for the Global Positioning System . SiRF is also the name for the respective products. SiRF chipsets can handle both the classic NMEA protocol and their own binary protocol , also known as SiRF .

The company SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. was founded in 1995 and is based in California's San José . It was listed on the NASDAQ technology exchange ( ticker symbol : SIRF) and a member of the Open Handset Alliance .

In 2005, SiRF acquired all of Motorola’s GPS chip manufacturing and sales for $ 20 million.

In 2007, SiRF acquired Centrality Communications , a manufacturer of GPS navigation chips. The purchase price was $ 283 million, which will be paid in cash and shares. Centrality Communications, based in Redwood, manufactured navigation solutions and mobile navigation devices. Since it was founded in 1999, it has developed various system-on-chip solutions for mobile navigation applications such as the Atlas and Titan navigation processors.

In the course of patent disputes and the financial crisis from 2007 , the share price lost over 98% of its value in the period from 2006 to 2009.

On February 9, 2009, the English company Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) announced that it would take over SiRF for approximately £ 91 million (€ 98.2 million) in the form of treasury shares. The merger of SiRF and CSR was completed on June 28, 2009, whereupon SiRF has now been completely absorbed into CSR and no longer exists as an independent company.
