You are called to Dr. Wilhälm Täll

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Si hei dr Wilhälm Täll ufgfüert is a Bern German chanson by the Swiss songwriter Mani Matter . It appeared on Matter's first record I han en Uhr erfunde in 1966.

content

The song is about a performance of the play Wilhelm Tell , which depicts the Swiss Confederates' mythical struggle for freedom . The venue is the Löwen restaurant in a fictional Swiss village called Nottiswil. The actors come from the village community as well as the audience. Triggered by a provocative comment by a fellow actor, there is a steadily growing brawl among the actors, who are divided between the two conflicting parties according to their roles. Finally, the audience intervenes. The fight ends - as intended in the play listed - with the victory of the Confederates. The song ends with the information that the insurance company has paid for the damage incurred, and the moral that "you will win freedom if it could be won like this".

meaning

According to Dieter Fringeli (1981), the song, along with four other chansons from the Bernese troubadours, "soon achieved a unique popularity within Swiss cultural life".
