The Sibyl Tower

The Sibyl Tower is a devotional column on Gothaer Platz below the Cyriaksburg in the west of Erfurt ( Brühlervorstadt ). It was built around the period between 1370 and 1380 in the Gothic style.

The sibyl tower shows scenes from the passion story in stone reliefs on its four sides. The first relief shows Christ praying in a rocky garden. The second relief depicts the kiss of Judas, the third depicts the crucifixion of Jesus and the fourth depicts the lamentation of Jesus.

The reliefs are roughly crafted and are based on the work of Johann Gerhart , who made some sculptures in the Severikirche .

In 1716 the Archbishop of Mainz, Lothar Franz von Schönborn, had the turret restored. It was also placed on a new base. In the 19th century the city grew to the west, so that the turret, which previously stood free in the corridor, was included in the design of the square. In 1993 the Sibyl Tower was renovated.

It is not known where the turret got its name from. There are several hypotheses about this, for example that it was built after the siege of Erfurt by Emperor Charles IV. In 1375. Another legend tells that Sibylle von Käfernburg had a memorial erected for her groom, who was slain here. The Sibyl Tower was used for the devotion of travelers who came to the city from the west on the Via regia . It is the only surviving prayer column from this period in Erfurt.
