Newly designed tram stop

The Gothaer Platz is a transport hub in the west of Erfurt in the center of the district Brühlervorstadt .

Gothaer Straße ( Bundesstraße 7 ) to Gotha in the west, Heinrichstraße ( Bundesstraße 4 ) to Nordhausen in the north, Cyriakstraße to Hochheim in the southwest, Rudolfstraße to Hugo-Preuss-Platz to the northeast, as well as Meineckestraße and the Brühler begin at Gothaer Platz Hollow road as residential streets to the west. In the south, Gothaer Platz turns into Benaryplatz , from which some streets branch off to the south and east. By 2009 the square was redesigned and rebuilt.

Gothaer Platz is not only important for individual traffic on the city ring , but also for public transport on the Erfurt tram . Lines 2 (Messe - Gothaer Platz - Brühler Garten - Anger - Ringelberg) and 4 (Bindersleben - Gothaer Platz - Domplatz - Anger - Wiesenhügel) meet here. As early as 1899, a tram line was opened through Brühlerwallstrasse not far east of Gothaer Platz. In 1904 a branch was built from it across the square to Meineckestrasse, which was extended to the Erfurt horticultural exhibition (egapark) in 1960 and is now used by line 2. The line 4 to the north was opened to the main cemetery in 1934 and extended to Bindersleben in 2005. It ran through Heinrichstrasse until 1980, and since then through Rudolfstrasse.

The perimeter development of the square, which was created around 1888, is not closed. On the northeast side there used to be the factory premises of the Funkwerk , the buildings of which are now largely demolished. Only the two high-rise office buildings are still in use. To the east of the square is the villa of the horticultural entrepreneur Ernst Benary , in which Wilhelm Benary later also lived. It was built in 1886 in the neo-renaissance style and today serves as the event venue for the Kölleda vocational training center , which emerged from the Funkwerk company school. In front of the villa, a monument from 2000 commemorates Ernst Benary.

The Tettaustraße park begins south of Gothaer Platz. The southwest side of the square is built with apartment buildings from the early 20th century. In addition, the egapark begins with the Cyriaksburg citadel ( German Horticultural Museum ) and the Sibyl tower from the 14th century. On the north-west side there are smaller one and two-family row houses from the first third of the 20th century. The north side of the square closes off a newly built church of the Federation of Free Evangelical Congregations in Germany .
