Security Information Service

Bezpečnostní informační služba (BIS), German " Security Information Service ", is the Czech domestic intelligence service. The secret service reports directly to the government.

This is organized militarily in the Czech Republic, i. H. its employees have military ranks and are authorized to carry and use firearms .

The intelligence service collects and exploits news relating to the security of the Czech Republic and was created as a protective body for the democratic constitution and its territorial integrity. To this end, he operates counter-espionage and terrorism activities and observes organized crime. However, it has no domestic executive power .

Historical development

After the Velvet Revolution , the communist secret service Státní bezpečnost was dissolved without any follow-up facilities. The new domestic intelligence service was built from scratch. In the beginning, there was a lack of specialist staff with the appropriate experience.

• February 16, 1990 - December 19, 1990 - Úřad pro ochranu ústavy a demokracie (ÚOUD, “Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Democracy”) as part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior
• December 20, 1990 - June 30, 1991 - Federální informační služba (FIS, “Federal Information Service”) as part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior
• July 1, 1991 - December 31, 1992 - Federální bezpečnostní informační služba (FBIS, “Federal Security Information Service”) established by Act No. 244/1991 Coll.
• January 1, 1993 - July 29, 1994 - Bezpečnostní informační služba České republiky (BIS ČR, “Security Information Service of the Czech Republic”) established by Act No. 527/1992 Coll.
• from July 30, 1994 - Bezpečnostní informační služba (BIS, "Security Information Service") established by Act No. 154/1994 Coll.
