Site of Special Scientific Interest , Local Nature Reserve

The Siddick Pond (also Siddick Ponds ) is a lake in Cumbria , England . Siddick Pond is located 1 km north of Workington and 500 m from the coast of the Irish Sea and is divided into two parts. A small part is separated by a dam in the southeast of the main part. The Siddick Pond was originally a swampy depression of the River Derwent , which flows south of it. With the construction of the Cumbrian Coast Line railway to the west , the lowland was filled with water. The lake has a water surface of 14.5 hectares . The Ling Beck forms its inflow on the east side and its outflow on the southeast side.

The lake and its surroundings form a Site of Special Scientific Interest of 21.4 hectares. The proximity to the coast makes the lake a magnet for many birds. Ornithologists have regularly observed the lake since 1921 and have counted more than 155 species of birds. At least 35 species of it also breed in the area, while other species come to winter or use the lake as a resting place.

The Siddick Pond Site of Special Scientific Interest is also protected as a Local Nature Reserve .
