The Siebente Querstraße is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 90 meter long Seventh Querstraße is located in the Marien Quartier on the western edge of the old town island and runs - with a slight curve - in a north-south direction. It begins at the Beckergrube opposite the confluence with Böttcherstraße and ends at Mengstraße , opposite the straight cross street .

history

The name of the street, which suggests the numbering of the cross streets in Lübeck's old town, is misleading. In fact, there was never such a numbering, and accordingly Seventh Querstraße never had the number 7. The name was created in a centuries-long process of corruption and misinterpretation.

When it was first mentioned in a document in 1401, the name was Zoghestrate , which meant Sauenstrasse and probably referred to the pigsties located here that belonged to an adjacent bakery. The name changed in the following centuries from Seghendwasstrate (Sauenquerstraße, 1469) to Soghendwerstrate (1574), Sogenstrate (1600), Siebendwerstrate (1787) and finally in 1852 to the official establishment of Seventh Dwasstraße , which was converted into the seventh cross street in 1884, which is still valid today has been.
