Christoph R. Siebrasse (* 1944 in Wermelskirchen ) is a furniture designer and artist who works primarily in the border area between sculpture and design .

life and work

In 1970 Siebrasse founded a studio together with Rainer Schenk, which was relocated from Kronberg im Taunus to Cologne in 1973 . Until 1979 Siebrasse carried out individual furniture designs and interior planning there. From 1979 to 1985 Siebrasse lived in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria , where he designed furnishings for holiday apartments.

After his return in 1986, Siebrasse founded the artist group Confrontation: Art und Design , again together with Rainer Schenk . In the period from 1987 to 1994, numerous furniture objects were created. In 1997 Christoph Siebrasse was appointed to the German Werkbund .

Siebrasse's works from the late 1980s and early 1990s, which were mostly unique items or hand-made objects in small editions, are often hand-welded frame constructions made of square steel tubing. Examples are the Russian chair (1992), the Freidenker writing pulpit (1988), a combination of chair and desk in a raised form like a high seat, and the sculptural storage furniture Pentagon-Dodecahedron (1990), in which a container in the form of the eponymous geometric body in Center of a frame construction is braced with steel cables. The armchair Sensilla (1988) also consists of a square tubular steel frame in combination with a seat made of marble or with a sandwich construction made of sheet steel and felt. Instead of a rigid connection, the seat is suspended from the frame at four points by means of steel cables. It allows the seat to move freely. Sensilla is used for furnishing in the library of the German Architecture Museum.

In addition to this metal furniture, Siebrasse repeatedly experimented with other materials. As a result, an extensive series of wooden furniture was created back in 1977, which was reissued in 2013. The butterfly armchair , which was originally made in Corian and marble as a unique piece, was also created in 1979 .
