Corian is the brand name of a mineral - organic composite material ( acrylic stone ) from DuPont , which was launched on the market in 1967.

Material and processing properties

The material consists of about 66% of its weight from gibbsite (a modification of aluminum hydroxide obtained from bauxite ), about 33% from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and from catalysts and other hardening agents. It is colored throughout or provided with color pigments and is available in 72 colors.

Outwardly it resembles marble , but has a more closed surface structure, a lower thermal conductivity - Corian: 0.769 W / (m · K) (similar to glass), marble: 2.8 W / (m · K) - and resistance to diluted acids . In contrast to marble, Corian can be milled and cut with woodworking tools , but it can also be thermally shaped in three dimensions and joined seamlessly, which is mainly achieved in the sanitary area (e.g. seamless washbasins integrated directly into the shelf surface), in kitchens, laboratories and operating rooms ( jointless work surfaces to avoid microbially contaminated dirt deposits) is used. Business and sales rooms can be individually designed by heat deformation of the material and the appropriate choice of color or inlay work ( company logos, etc.). When manufacturing jewelry and everyday objects, Corian is glued to wood , metals or other plastics .

Design, architecture and artistic uses

In addition to the purely functional processing, the material also allows the artistic design of everyday objects and industrial designers such as Ross Lovegrove , Ingo Maurer , Philippe Starck , Jean Nouvel , Yves Béhar , Rosita Missoni and the architect Zaha Hadid have designed everyday objects and applications from Corian. DuPont has design studios in Milan , New York , Philadelphia and Shanghai to develop further designs . The facade cladding of the Seeko'o Hotel in Bordeaux 2007 can serve as an example .

Students at Philadelphia University, College of Design, used Corian to design utensils and furnishings that were exhibited at the Philadelphia Center for Architecture in the fall of 2010.

In terms of artistic design, the spectrum of applications ranges from the commemorative plaques of the Birmingham Walk of Stars (whose first prize was Ozzy Osbourne in 2007), church altars and specially designed crosses (especially in the USA) to the engraved flower-like wall ornaments in the restored exhibition space Le Premier Versailles - Séjour de Fête et de Plaisirs (1624–1668) of the Chateau de Versailles .

Comparable composite material

A composite material comparable to Corian in terms of composition and processing properties are HI-MACS from LG Hausys , which consists of 75% bauxite and 25% polyacrylate, mineral material STARON from Samsung SDI or mineral material Hanex from Hanwha L&C with a similar composition. The areas of application are the same as for Corian.
