Infirmary

The infirmary is a listed building in Zofingen in the canton of Aargau . It is located at Aarburgerstrasse 21 directly on the municipal boundary to Oftringen and is classified as a cultural asset of national importance .

The history of the infirmary (also known as the special hospital) goes back to the time the city was founded in the early 13th century. The building was located far outside the core of the settlement at the time, in order to be able to take in lepers who were not allowed into the city. Since leprosy only occurred sporadically from the 17th century, the infirmary changed over time into a nursing home for the sick and needy. Locals were permanently admitted, while strangers were only given temporary asylum. Funding was provided by charitable foundations. After the death of the last head of the institution, the infirmary was closed in 1888 and replaced by more modern institutions.

Master builder Antoni Stab built the building that still exists today in 1609/10. It is a free-standing, two-story residential building in the late Gothic style with a steep hipped roof . It has ashlar masonry on the ground floor and half-timbered on the upper floor . The windows have profiled and sculpted walls . From 1447 the chapel of the lower cross stood next to the infirmary. This had to be removed in 1811 due to total dilapidation, as did the wall that surrounded the chapel and infirmary.
