Relief with a sick comforter at an inn in Deventer

Disease comforters (seken-comforter, süken-comforter, Dutch ziekentrooster, krankenbezoeker , French consolateur des malades ), also sick comforters, had the task of visiting the sick on ships of the East India Company and giving them comfort. They also held prayer on board. In this position were mostly young clergy, but also lay people . Mockingly , they were also called head hangers .

By 1800, the Dutch East India Company sent pastors and almost 800 comforters to the colonies who tried to proselytize the local population.
