Siegfried Gehrke

Siegfried Gehrke (born February 8, 1965 in Schwäbisch Hall ) is a former German American football player and coach.

career

Gehrke grew up in the Stadtheide in Schwäbisch Hall, his parents' house burned down during his childhood and he lost his father at an early age when he died after a heart transplant. After acquiring their higher education at school at St. Michael Gehrke went to study (English and Sport for teaching) to the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg . He later trained as a teacher for ethics and became a member of the faculty of the commercial school in Hall. Gehrke, who had played soccer as a youth , co-founded the American football department in the gymnastics and sports community (TSG) Schwäbisch Hall in 1983 . He played for Schwäbisch Hall from 1984 to 1990 in the first and second football Bundesliga and was used in several positions (especially quarterback , tight end , center ). At the same time, Gehrke got involved in the youth work of the club as a youth coach from 1985. In 1991 he became head coach of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns , the TSG men's team. In the first years in office, Gehrke was still on the field as a player-coach. In 1995 he led the team to the regional league promotion, in 1996 he made the leap to the 2nd Bundesliga and in 2000 to the GFL , the highest German division.

In 2011 and 2012 Gehrke won the German championship with Schwäbisch Hall, in 2014, 2015 and 2016 they became runner-up. In 2015 he led the team to the Eurobowl , but there they lost to Braunschweig. Between the first GFL year 2001 and 2016, the Unicorns under Gehrke's leadership only missed the championship round once. In October 2016, Gehrke announced his decision to step down after 26 years as head coach of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. As head coach in the GFL, Gehrke achieved a total of 150 wins, 56 losses and seven draws. He was succeeded by Jordan Neuman . Gehrke, who was referred to as "the tireless engine of the TSG department" and "Unicorns legend", stayed with the club as sports director.
