The grammar school near St. Michael Schwäbisch Hall is a general education grammar school sponsored by the large district town of Schwäbisch Hall . It is named after Saint Michael , whom the sculpture depicts the slayer of Satan in front of the west entrance as a dragon slayer.

history

The grammar school near St. Michael was founded in 1655 as a grammar school illustrious , making it the oldest secondary school in the Schwäbisch Hall district and one of the oldest schools in the German-speaking area . A Latin school in Hall that preceded the grammar school was first mentioned in 1318.

In 1655 the city's Latin school was elevated to a high school, which in 1764 received a new school building, the so-called class building . After the city passed to Württemberg , the grammar school was downgraded to a three-class Latin school in 1811. In 1873 the Latin school was rebuilt together with a Realanstalt founded in 1838 , and in 1877 it became a grammar school again. In 1908 it became a secondary school , which was incorporated into the upper secondary school (the former secondary school ). The united high school was named Mergenthaler High School in 1937 after its former teacher Christian Mergenthaler . On the 300th anniversary of the high school in 1955, it was finally given its current name of high school near St. Michael .

Location and building

Until 1966 the grammar school was located in the old town, just north of the Michaelskirche . In 1966 the company moved to a new building on the southern edge of the Kreuzäckersiedlung (Tüngentaler Straße 92) on the eastern elevation of the urban area, about one kilometer east of the old location. The school center east of the city was created from 1977 through the construction of the Schenkensee secondary and secondary school, which is immediately to the northeast.

The building is now a four storey high, rectangular concrete structure with a likewise rectangular inner courtyard in which a green area and part of the playground are located. In 1999, a fourth floor was added to the original three-story building and an elevator was installed. There is an observatory and a photovoltaic system on the flat roof .
