from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried II. († December 16 around 1163), due to the count in his house also as Siegfried III. referred to, came from the side branch of the Counts of Lebenau of the Spanheim family . After the death of his father Siegfried I von Lebenau , he followed him as Count von Lebenau and Vogt of the monasteries of St. Emmeram and Seeon . Later he also acquired the bailiwick of the Salzburg cathedral chapter .

Live and act

Siegfried II. Was the only child from the marriage of Siegfried I von Lebenau and Adelheid von Dießen.

After his father's death, he followed him in 1132 as the new Count of Lebenau and as Vogt of St. Emmeran and Seeon . Siegfried then moved most of his dominion from Carinthia to the Bavarian-Salzburg area.

Around the year 1140 Siegfried was in the retinue of the Bavarian Duke Leopold von Babenberg .

On November 18, 1150, he acquired the bailiwick rights of the Salzburg cathedral chapter for its possessions in Chiemgau. This meant an immense gain in power and influence for the count family. He succeeded in securing the bailiwick in such a way that it remained with his family until it died out in 1229.

Together with other members of the Spanheim family, Siegfried II was involved in a feud against the Gurk bailiffs, the Askuiner . They managed to defeat them, whereupon they appropriated their properties in Lower Styria. How this conflict came about and how it developed is unknown.

Siegfried II died on December 16 around 1163. His successor was initially unregulated, as his two sons Siegfried III. and Otto I. must have been a minor at this time. It was not until 1174 that his eldest son appeared as Count von Lebenau.
