Rudolf John (* 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian film critic .

Life

After graduating from high school, John studied at the Vienna Film Academy in 1965/1966 . After dropping out of his studies, he worked as a freelance journalist in Berlin . In 1968 he became a member of the editorial team of the daily newspaper Kurier in Vienna .

There he initially worked as a columnist , later he did interviews there in the fields of pop music and culture . In 1980 he finally became director of film criticism and reporting at the Kurier. From 1987 he also wrote a column with film tips in the TV magazine “Fernseh- u. Radio Week ".

In addition, from 1980 he wrote journalistic works for various publications (including editor-in-chief of the magazine "hit") and was a freelance author a. a. at ORF . As an author, he was significantly involved in many ORF productions , including "Wünsch dir was", "Hidden Camera" and the quiz shows "What if", "Family Festival" and "Krimi, Krimi".

Between 1996 and 2010, John worked as a lecturer in media studies and communication at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts at the Institute for Film & Television. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as a film critic for the private television station ATV ; he then worked for a year for ORF on the program “Chili”. In 2009 he took over the column "John of the Week" in the courier . Since autumn 2011 his current Kurier column about movies on TV has been called “John's Classic”. From December 2011 he was hired as the film commissioner of the Echo Medienhaus in Vienna and since then has written the column “Film of the week” for the Wiener Bezirksblatt, the column “Film of the month” for the VORmagazin and is head of the film department in Wienlive magazine .

In 2010 he was given the professional title of Professor by the Austrian Federal Minister Johannes Hahn . In 2019 he was awarded the Golden City Hall Man by the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig .

Rudolf John lives in Vienna and Berlin.

John is considered one of the leading film critics in Austria. In the course of his life as a critic he has written over 10,000 film reviews. In 1990 he was the initiator and has been the organizer of the ROMY film and television award since then . He is also responsible for the Undine Film Awards and the Undine Film Days . He also gained international fame through the introduction of the Billy Wilder Prize .
