Siegfried Schaarschmidt
Siegfried Schaarschmidt (born 1925 in Pleiße (Saxony); died August 17, 1998 ) was a translator, poet and essayist with a focus on Japanese literature.
life and work
Schaarschmidt was a poet, translator and critic of Japanese literature. He has written numerous publications on Japanese literature and has edited various anthologies. He met quite a number of the writers, whose works he translated into German, personally and was able to learn a lot about their understanding of literature, their way of thinking and worldview in intensive discussions. He was also the author of author portraits a. a. for broadcasting.
On November 3, 1992, Schaarschmidt received the Order of the Rising Sun on Ribbon - Golden Rays for his contributions to the introduction to Japanese literature and his services to the Japanese-German cultural exchange. - Together with Jürgen Berndt, he was awarded the Noma Translator Prize (野 間 文 芸 翻 訳 賞, Noma bungei hon'yaku-shō) in 1993.
To translate writers include Abe Kobo , Betsuyaku Minoru , Ihara Saikaku , Inoue Yasushi , Katase Kazuo , Yasunari Kawabata , Yukio Mishima , Ogai Mori , Nakagami Kenji , Junzaburō Nishiwaki , Oda Makoto , Ōe Kenzaburo , Takebe Socho (1761-1814), Tanikawa Shuntaro , Tsuji Yukio (1939-2000).
