Siegfried Thomas
Siegfried Thomas (born January 21, 1930 in Lauta , Niederlausitz; † November 4, 1985 in East Berlin ) was a GDR historian.
Life
After completing his commercial training (1949–1951), Thomas attended the workers 'and farmers' faculty at the Pedagogical University in Potsdam and then studied history at the Leningrad State University .
From 1956 he was an assistant at the Institute for German History at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1960 he became a research assistant at the Central Institute for History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and in 1971 department head. He dealt with German history from 1945 onwards, did his doctorate with an investigation into the history of the origins of the SED (published in 1964 as “Decision in Berlin”) and, together with Rolf Badstübner, wrote the post-doctoral dissertation “Die Spaltung Deutschlands 19451949” (1966; extended revision: “Restoration und Spaltung ”, 1975).
