Siegmund Prillwitz
Siegmund Prillwitz (born April 11, 1942 ) is a German linguist and founder of the Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf at the University of Hamburg .
Life
After studying German, Prillwitz began studying the problems of language acquisition for the deaf in 1971 . He saw the sign language , which was intentionally not taught in German deaf schools at the time , as relevant for the communication of the deaf and was the first to examine and describe the German Sign Language (DGS) using linguistic methods.
In 1987 Prillwitz founded the Center for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf at the University of Hamburg , which in 1993 became an independent institute in the Linguistics Department. As the head of the institute, he campaigned for the recognition of sign language as a minority language and against oralism . He retired in September 2005.
