Siemens PT80i

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Siemens PT80i (Printer Terminal 80 Inkjet) is the first ink printer to be sold commercially from 1977 (often incorrectly referred to as an inkjet printer ) that works according to the 'drop-on-demand' principle. It was developed in the central laboratory for data technology at Siemens AG in Munich with the major contribution of Joachim Heinzl . It is a matrix printer whose piezo-electric print head with 12 nozzles could print 270 characters per second (at 10 characters per inch) bidirectionally. In contrast to the dot matrix printers that were widespread at the time (including the Siemens PT80 dot matrix printer), this ink printer is faster, very quiet and saves energy.

Printhead details

The print head with its 12 piezoelectric tube actuators is mechanically complex to manufacture (embedding the nozzles in cast resin) and therefore relatively expensive, but very durable. Ejected ink drops reach a speed of 5 m / s, have a diameter of 70 µm, a mass of 0.18 µg and a volume of 180 * 10 −15  m³.

Print resolution

The PT80i achieves a resolution of 96 dpi, the successor products PT88S (A4 continuous paper) / PT89S (A3 continuous paper) achieve 72 dpi in 1984 with 9 nozzles, the PT90i in 1985 with 32 nozzles 240 dpi on continuous paper or via single sheet feed. The PT80i2 displays upper and lower case letters from eight country-specific character sets from the character generator with 12 × 9 points, in graphic mode 12 × 14 points are possible with individual control. 96 characters with a 12 × 13 dot print raster can be stored in the loadable pixel memory.

Paper and ink

A3 continuous paper (max. 400 mm wide) is printed, which is conveyed past the print head by a tractor or a spiked roller. Laser printing paper can also be used as the type of paper instead of ink printing paper. The ink used is document-proof (Computerwoche of April 23, 1982).

connection

The connection is made via the serial or parallel interface of the controlling computer or terminal , the PT80i can be used as a hardcopy printer (i.e. connected to the terminal ) or as a dialog station (i.e. connected to the computer).
