The Sierra Leone Red Cross ( English Sierra Leone Red Cross Society , SLRCS) is the national society of the Red Cross in Sierra Leone by the Geneva Red Cross Conventions and as such part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement . The organization was founded in 1962 on the basis of a law passed by parliament and is based in the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown .

Today (as of August 2017) the organization has offices in all 14 areas of Sierra Leone. The current president of the organization is Edward Tamba Ngandi , who was the Registrar of the University of Sierra Leone until 2012 (as of August 2017).

history

The organization was founded in 1962 and in recent years has mainly campaigned for the fight against the Ebola virus disease , with the WHO still reported in October 2015 that there were just over 14,000 infected people (including suspected cases) in Sierra Leone would give. At the end of 2015, the WHO reported that the Ebola epidemic in West Africa had stopped and that Sierra Leone was ebola-free. In August 2017, the organization was primarily involved in providing aid after the severe storms with more than 400 dead and over 600 missing .
