Sigeric II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigeric II. (Also Sigric ) was king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex from 825 to around 840 .

In 825, Egbert von Wessex defeated Mercia at the Battle of Ellandun . Following this victory, Kent , Surrey , the Kingdom of Sussex and the Kingdom of Essex submitted to the rule of Wessex . King Sigered was expelled and Essex was annexed to the Kingdom of Wessex as a sub-kingdom. At least in Mercia Sigeric II was recognized as king, but no statements can be made about the nature and extent of his position of power. Sigeric II was the last to call himself “King of the East Saxons” in a document. In the Charter S1791 he was only appointed minister(Latin for "servant, helper") titled by King Wiglaf of Mercien .

According to some historians, Sigeric II and his predecessor Sigered are the same person.
