Signe Kivi

Signe Kivi (born February 24, 1957 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician and artist. She has been the rector of the Estonian Art Academy in Tallinn since 2005 .

Signe Kivi graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1975. From 1975 to 1980 she studied textile art at the Estonian Academy of Art. From 1980 to 1985 Signe Kivi worked as an artistic designer at the Kodu company , and from 1985 to 1991 at Art . Since 1988 she has been teaching at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

With the regaining of Estonian independence, Signe Kivi went into politics. From 1990 to 1992 she was a member of the Estonian Congress (Eesti Congress) and from 1996 to 1999 and 2002 a member of the Tallinn City Council. In 1999 she joined the liberal reform party (Reformierakond) . In 1998/99 Signe Kivi was President of the Estonian Artists' Association (Eesti Kunstnike Liit) .

From March 1999 to November 2002 Signe Kivi was in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Mart Laar and Siim Kallas Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia. After a financial scandal at the state cultural foundation Eesti Kultuurkapital , she voluntarily resigned from her position. From 2003 to 2005 she was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). She has been a member again since the 2019 parliamentary election .

Signe Kivi has been the rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts since 2005. In addition, she appears in public with numerous exhibitions at home and abroad.

Private life

Signe Kivi is married to the Estonian artist and animation filmmaker Kalju Kivi (* 1951). She has two sons and a daughter of her own.
