The Sihlporte was a city gate of the fourth city fortification on the left side of the Limmatufer . It was not until 1661 between the lion and the Katz bulwark in the curtain wall built. On the city side there was a customs house in the center of the square . In addition to the Sihlporte, the Sihl Canal was led through the city fortifications. Even outside the city fortifications, it crosses the Sihl with an aqueduct .
The Sihlporte was one of the most important gates of the city of Zurich. because it was the only drivable access to the city on the left of the Limmat. The road leading out of the city gate led to Baden .
The wall between the Löwen- and Katzbollwerk was removed from 1834, as was the Sihlporte and today's Sihlporte square was created .
In the 1930s a business center with the houses Schmidhof, Handelshof and Sihlporte 3 was built around the Sihlporte, the latter building being the only one that uses Sihlporte as the address.
