The Silberluk'n or Silberlukn is a former silver mine in Windpassing in the municipality of Neustadtl an der Donau , Lower Austria.

history

In the age of the emerging industrialization, at the end of the 18th century, many parts of the monarchy at that time were looking for mineral resources . Samples were also taken in Neustadtl an der Donau on behalf of the emperor. Below the Höflerwiese or "Jägerwiese" the state officials finally found what they were looking for. After the silver content of a rock discovery in "Bachl" could be confirmed was started with the mining and (= 1.89 meters 1 yards) wide-ranging one about 20 fathoms tunnels into the rock driven . Due to a lack of sufficient output and probably also due to the beginning of the "Napoleon Wars", the mine was abandoned after only a few years. In 1831 a former squire tried to get the mining going again, but failed.

Legends and Myths

Access to the old mine was retained until shortly after the Second World War and served as a shelter for some war refugees and deserters during the war years. Many other episodes and stories are still popularly handed down to this day. Some of them are based on fact, while others come from the realm of myth. After the end of the war, a landslide closed the entrance. Old records also spoke of a demolition immediately after the war, which however turned out to be incorrect. In 1998 the entrance was cleared and secured again by the Neustadtl an der Donau tourist association.

The quality of the water in the well in the Silberlukn was tested a few years ago and declared as mineral water due to its mineral composition and quality.

Meaning today

From 1999 on, the Silberluk'n served as a popular excursion destination and could be viewed and visited by interested parties until 2018. Since 2018 this is no longer possible due to legal problems regarding liability and private ownership.
